Leo Steen Chenin Blanc "Peaberry" '18

Leo Steen Chenin Blanc "Peaberry" '18

Leo Hansen has emerged as one of the young stars in the California wine scene. Born and raised in Denmak, his path towards making wine in California started with his experiences in childhood. His father who was a chef, incorporated Leo into his business, working in the kitchen at age 12. He eventually chose a new path and became a sommelier. His work as a sommelier gave him the opportunity to travel and visit wine regions, and it was his time in California that made him decide to take a leap of faith and move from Europe.

Winemakers that are born into a winemaking family often have their plans predisposed. You work with the family vineyards, you grow the same grapes that have always come from that place. Leo had a different opportunity as an "outsider." He could work with any grape, he could source from different appellations, the opportunities were endless.

One thing that is most important at Leo Steen, is that the grapes maintain their identity of place. He values lower alcohol wines, working with native ferments and old oak. The wine simply must show terroir.

Chenin Blanc, one of the world's greatest and most complex grape varietals have become the focus at Leo Steen. Through his offerings, each Chenin Blanc cuvée has its own purpose and profile, greatly different from one another, each respectively spectacular. This month we are featuring the "Peaberry" cuvée, named for the small berries from old Chenin Blanc vines that come from Mendocino County. The vineyard is located in the Southeastern hills of Ukiah, planted in the mid-1970s on a gentle slope in Pinole gravelly loam soils.

The grapes were whole - cluster pressed to tank. Then juice was racked to neutral French oak and Acacia barrels for fermentation using spontaneous yeast, including spontaneous malolactic fermentation, where the wine aged for about 5 months. The wine shows beautiful yellow and green apple notes alongside honeysuckle, lemon peel with a briny edge. There's a hint of creaminess on the palate helps to balance the acidity, but ultimately this is a wine that is defined by its acidity, nerve and focus.

Enjoy the first debut of what will be many more from Leo Steen, as we welcome his wines to Chicago!
