Lindes de Remelluri Rioja "Viñedos de San Vicente de la Sonsierra" '12

In Spring of 2014, Perman Wine was the first store in Chicago to introduce the first releases of Lindes de Remelluri.

On that newsletter I spoke about a trip that I took to Rioja, and how it opened my eyes to the promotional challenges that Rioja faced as a region. How could Spain's most famous wine region have a promotional challenge?

The answer lies in how we talk about the wines. Explaining what makes a wine special is challenging to do. Especially so in the case of Rioja. What's the difference between Bodegas Muga "Torre Muga" and La Rioja Alta '904" Gran Reserva? The answer a wine professional would give is that "Torre Muga" is a "modern" Rioja and La Rioja Alta a "traditional producer." Some might expound by talking about the type of oak and the length of aging.

But does any of this really tell us about the wine? In an ocean of Rioja choices, how does one really differentiate.

There are many, including myself, that believe the future success of Rioja depends largely on producers focusing more on terroir, whether it be single vineyard wines or wines from a single village.

The Remelluri estate is one of Rioja's most important terroir, and winemaker and owner Telmo Rodríguez is producing some of the top wines of the region. The Remelluri estate is located in the Rioja Alavesa sub-region, and its history dates back to the 14th century when monks founded a sanctuary and farm at the site.

"Lindes de Remelluri" means borders of Remelluri, and it is a way for Telmo to show the terroir of neighboring villages.

This wine comes from the vineyards in the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, located at 500 meters, this is a warm village, that typically yields ripe fruit, with lower tannins.

The 2012 San Vicente is a stunning Rioja value. Beautiful aromatics combine creamed red raspberry, tobacco leaf, and mineral. Full-bodied, yet with great freshness and energy, and a soft dusting of tannins on the finish. This way overdelivers for its price point.
