Maculan "Brentino Rosso" Veneto '16

Maculan "Brentino Rosso" Veneto '16

Upon thinking about Bordeaux varietals in Italy, our minds immediately go to Tuscany, home of the "Super Tuscan." However, before grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot travelled south to the be planted under the Tuscan sun, they first made home in the Veneto region, located in Northeast Italy.

Bordeaux varietals planted in the Veneto date back to the 1830s in comparison to Tuscany's commercialization of these international varietals in the 1970s. Merlot is now one of the most widely planted red varieties in Veneto and the region has Italy’s largest plantings of the grape, with Cabernet Sauvignon not too far behind. In fact, the varietals are considered traditional plantings, with over 200 years of cultivation.

Maculan's winery is in the town of Breganze, a village in the heart of Veneto, at the foot of the Asiago high plains. Here, the hillside vineyards are full of rich, volcanic and limestone soil. The climate is fairly mild with mediterranean inflects, creating a swing in temperature from day to night, aiding in natural moderation.

In result, a wine like Maculan's "Brentino," which is 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, exudes a softer, more refined expression. The wine is aged for one year, split between tank and French barrique (1/3 new). With its modern twist in vinification, the profile shows soft, fresh blackberry and black cherry, hints of cedar and sweet tannins on the finish. A wonderful pairing with any roasted dishes.
