Matthiasson "Dead Fred Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon '14

Steve Mattiason took an interest in gardening and turned it into a career as one of the most respected viticulturists in California. Focusing on sustainable agriculture since his first job in 1994, he literally wrote the book on sustainable vineyard practices in California in 1999. The list of respected producers he’s worked with in Napa and Sonoma is impressive.

Jill Klein also comes from an agricultural background, studying botany and soil science, and working for non-profits to help promotes locally grown, sustainable produce as early as the 90’s. Making wine is intrinsically linked with her personal relationship with Steve - they made their first vintage together mere months after they began dating.

Together, Steve and Jill have contributed significantly to California agriculture, and have led the way of the “third-wave” of California wine. The focus of Matthiason, which the two started in 2003, has been on finding ways to farm and make wine that make the most of the local climate while retaining freshness and balance.

This wine is from Coombsville in Napa. The wine shows ripe, bold dark fruit with spice, fresh herbs and a velvety tannic structure. It boasts power, elegance and a sense of place.
