Rhône Valley

Matthieu Dumarcher “Léon & Séraphin” Vin de France ’18

Near Cairanne in the La Baume-de-Transit region of the Southern Rhône, is where Matthieu cultivates old-vine Grenache, Syrah and Carignan.

Matthieu is a self-made, first generation vigneron who went school for viticulture, and seems to have exceeded any agenda most post-grads end up with.

His winery was founded based on an area with specifically old-vines to work with - he wasn't tied to any specific region, as long as this credential was present.

Matthieu's wines see elements found in natural wine, such as being unfined/unfiltered, with minimal addition of sulfites. With such great concentration and depth, brough out from the old-vines, it's no wonder his vinification process can be on the minimal side of things.

"Léon & Seraphin" is a 50-50 blend of Grenache and Syrah. The Grenache vines average age of 60-70 years old, and the Syrah around 40 years old. 50% of the grapes were destemmed, and 50% underwent carbonic maceration. After fermentation, the wine is aged in tank to preserve freshness. The result is a juicy, bright wine of great balance. Red fruits appear on the nose, with a dark fruit element on the palate, alongside peppery, gariggue notes, indicative of the terroir.
