Matthieu Dumarcher “Vin Rouge” Vin de France ’17

The Drôme Provençale is the gateway to Provence. Technically part of the Rhône Alpes administrative region, it lies just to the north of the Vaucluse. Looking around and you know you are in the south of France. Fields of lavender dot the landscape, olives and truffles appear on the local menu’s, and Rhône varietals grow through its vineyards.

After graduating from Montpelier with an enology degree, Matthieu Dumarcher set out on a mission to produce wines made solely from grapes. These wines would have natural vinifications, would use no additives (no yeast, no enzyme, no tartaric acidity, no tannins). It was also of utmost importance that they would reflect their terroir and vintage, as well as offer balance, and of course, be delicious to drink.

Matthieu was willing to locate anywhere in France that would allow him to follow this mission. He eventually settled on La Baume de Transit in the Drôme. He purchased 4 hectares of vineyards from retiring farmers, who owned fantastic parcels of old-vine Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah.

Matthieu currently owns 5 hectares of vineyards, producing between 10,000 - 20,000 bottles a year.

The 2017 “‘Vin Rouge”is a blend of 40% Grenache and 20% Carignan, 50 year-old vines, grown in red clay and limestone soil. The other 40% is Syrah, 20 year-old vines, planted in clay. All vines are farmed organically.

The grapes are picked by hand, with further selection made on a sorting table. Fermentation is in tank, with aging for 13 months in old oak barrels as well as vats.

Beautiful kirsch and spice aromas lead into a medium-bodied palate filled with black and red fruits, notes of coffee and a long, balanced finish. The Dumarcher wines always have incredible extract, without seeming heavy or liqueur-like. The crop level was a mere 25 hl/ha, and just 4640 bottles were produced.

Pour this with your Thanksgiving dinner for those that want a fuller-bodied option, or save and pair with a seared duck breast.
