Mazzi Valpolicella Classico Superiore "Sanperetto" '14

Mazzi Valpolicella Classico Superiore "Sanperetto" '14

Valpolicella is one of Italy's great Italian red table wines. While much of the focus of the region is on its more famous big brother, Amarone, when it comes to "everyday" drinking, Valpolicella is a great "go to."

One of the leaders in the region is the Mazzi estate, located in the hills of Negrar. Roberto Mazzi started the winery in the 1960's, and today it is run by his sons, Stefano and Antonio.

They work with the classic varietals of the region: Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara. The family working as naturally as possible in the vineyards, the goal is to produce elegantly styled and complex wines.

"Sanperetto" the name originally used for the winery, is a great entry point into the Mazzi line-up. Made from predominantly Corvina, splashes of Rondinella and Molinara are included. Fermentation and maceration with the skins is done in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged in larger oak casks for a year.

The 2014 is in a perfect place right now, with intense dark cherry notes, hints at leather, spice and mineral. The wine is medium bodied, with good freshness.

A great wine to have on hand for those pizza nights.
