Ponce "La Xara" Garnacha '17

Ponce "La Xara" Garnacha '17

Whenever I lead a newsletter with a particular wine, it is purposeful. I am saying to you the reader, this is a wine to pay particular attention to.

There was no doubt in my mind then, to begin this month’s wine club with this wine from Juan António Ponce of Bodegas Ponce.

He is one of the young winemakers of Spain to watch, having been mentored by Telmo Rodríguez, and working as his right man at Compañia de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez.

Ponce started his own winery in 2005 at the age of 23, with the help of his father who owned a small amount of property in the DO of Manchuela. This small appellation is located within the larger Castile-La Mancha district to the west of city of Valencia. This region has a continental climate, with long dry and hot summers, that are helped by the winds coming from the Levant.

“La Xara” is produced with hand harvested Grenache grown in clay-calcareous soils. The wine is fermented with natural yeast in open-top large wooden tanks. The wine is matured for 10 months in large, old oak barrels.

The resulting wine has pure red fruit aromas, spice and garrigue notes, and a long, surprisingly elegant finish. It still falls into the medium-bodied category, but its success is in its balance. A very food-friendly wine, this can work beautifully with a Moroccan-style chicken tagine.
