Quinta das Bágeiras Espumante Rosé Bruto Natural '18

We’ve been holding out on you!

Over the past month we’ve featured a handful of sparkling wines from the great Portuguese producer, Quinta das Bágeiras. We were saving their fantastic Sparkling Rosé for this month’s wine club!

One of Portugal's most important quality producers, Bágeiras is located in the Bairrada region, an Atlantic influenced region, just 15 kilometers from the coast.

While longtime growers in the region, it wasn't until 1989, when Mário Sérgio Alves Nuno decided to stop selling the grapes of vineyards belonging to his grandparents, and instead create estate bottled wines. Mário Sérgio has said "I wanted the production of our wines to be accomplished through traditional methods, without ignoring the constant developments observed in the fields of viticulture and oenology. That is why, for example, all our grapes are handpicked, our red wines are produced in lagares without added yeasts and why our sparkling wines have no residual sugar. I believe quality means nothing without identity."

So while Quinta das Bágeiras isn't the oldest winery in Bairrada, it is traditional, and the wines do speak to the region and to the identity of the vineyards and the people who produce it.

Sparkling wine is something that Bairrada is becoming well-known for. At Quinta das Bágeiras, almost 60% of production is sparkling wine. It is well known that Mário Sérgio loves sparkling wine. I was once at a tasting in Champagne, and looked over my right shoulder to see Mário Sérgio standing next to me. He is truly dedicated to his craft.

The classic red grape varietal of Bairrada is Baga. It is a late ripening grape variety, that is often compared to Nebbiolo from Piedmont due to the similar nature of their tannins and acidity. Yet Baga is so unique and individual, it can be vinified in different ways, producing different results.

Quinta das Bágeiras produces this fantastic Champagne method rosé sparkling entirely from Baga. The juice spends between 2 and 3 days with its skins before fermentation in stainless steel tank. With its secondary fermentation in bottle, Mário Sérgio does not add any sugar to the liqueur d’expedition after the disgorgment.

This deeply colored Rosé sparkling offers notes of wild strawberry, rhubarb, mineral and spice on the nose. It is really well balanced in its integration of the fruit flavors, mineral and earth notes. Not only is this a great sparkling wine to toast with, it is equally adept at the table with simple salads to grilled brats.
