Quinta de Porrais Branco, Douro '18

Quinta de Porrais Branco, Douro '18

Earlier this month we featured the entry level white wine from Quinta de Porrais called "Porrais" Branco. Today, we focus on the flagship white wine of the estate. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, also known as Ferreirinha, is one of the Douro Valley's most iconic figures. More important than the fact that she was the largest land owner in the Douro Valley, and one of Portugal's wealthiest people, when people talk about her legacy, they reference what she did to uplift the people of the Douro. She was an advocate for worker's rights, a champion for the poor, and certainly a role model for women given her importance in what still is today a male dominated business. Quinta de Porrais was one of the roughly 20 estates that Ferreirinha owned at the time of her death in 1896. This magnificent Quinta is located at in the northern hills of the Cima Corgo region in the Douro. Much of the estate vineyards are high elevation, making them ideal for fresh and mineral white wines. While Quinta de Porrais is not owned by the family anymore, her great-great-great grandson "Xito" Olazabal still makes the wines today. He also happens to be the winemaker for the great former vineyard of the Ferreirinha holdings, Quinta do Vale Meão. Quinta de Porrais Branco is produced from the local indigenous varietals Rabigato and Códega do Larinho. Fermented and rested in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, this wine really leaps from the glass. Explosive aromas of fresh melon and white flowers. The texture is silky, with a surprising core of fruit in the mid palate, and a long, explosive finish. This is perennially one of Portugal's top white wine values. Pair it with fresh oysters or spicier preparations of shellfish.
