Cinsault is a grape varietal that most of us have never had as a mono-varietal wine. If you are a fan of Rhône varietal wines, particularly those from the Southern Rhône or the Languedoc, then you have likely tasted Cinsault as part of a blend. It is a grape that adapts well to very dry climates, as it is drought resistant.

Cinsault found its way to South Africa, and its importance in the wine scene there is two-fold.

Cinsault has been cross-bred with Pinot Noir to create the distinctly South African varietal Pinotage. Love it or hate it, the varietal is synonymous with South African wine.

Cinsault also secretly played a role in many of South Africa's best and most ageworthy wines. Many winemakers have told me stories of tasting red blends from South Africa, that had cellared magnificently over one or two decades of aging in bottle. The secret of many of those bottles was that Cinsault was often used as a significant part of the blend.

The resulting effect of these tastings was that many younger winemakers in South Africa began to focus on the varietal. They began to not only include it in their blends, but also produce wines entirely from Cinsault.

Donovan Rall is one of those young winemakers that was inspired by what he tasted in some of those older wines. He also was inspired by another young South African winemaker, Eben Sadie, whose "Poffader" Cinsault helped launch the varietal on an international stage.

Donovan keeps things simple at the winery. He starts with using low-yielding grapes from old-vines. The fruit comes from two regions, Darling and Swartland. This Cinsault was whole bunch fermented with natural yeasts. It was aged in old oak casks for a little over 6 months.

Neal Martin of Vinous recently review the wine: "The 2018 Cinsault is whole-bunch-pressed, naturally fermented and aged in used oak and concrete. It has a lovely bouquet of morello cherry, blueberry and light crushed violet aromas, demonstrating more fruit intensity than some other more anemic Cinsaults that one finds in the Cape. The well-balanced palate delivers supple tannins, well-judged acidity and an understated, delineated, lightly spiced finish that is just pure class. This is a superb Cinsault that should give 12 to 15 years of drinking pleasure. 93 Points"
