Ramírez de la Piscina Rioja Crianza '15

Ramírez de la Piscina is an ancient aristocratic family name linked to medieval tradition, which comes from the Romanesque Church of Santa María de la Piscina (12th century). It is the family name and continues to be a family affair with current generation, Cecilio Ramirez de la Piscina, as the head winemaker.  Although the family has had roots in the area, cultivating vineyards for around 100 years, it wasn't until 1987 that the family winery debuted under the name Ramírez de la Piscina.

The winery and vineyards are in Ábalos and San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in the Rioja Alta appellation.  These two zones are located at the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria mountain range that are famous for their limestone rich calcareous clay soils. These soils and the high altitude result in a limited area of cultivation that are responsible for producing some of the most fresh and elegant styles in Rioja.

The "Crianza" bottling attains Tempranillo vines averaging in age around 25 years old.  Everything is harvested by hand, given such geographical features.  The grapes are then destemmed and fermentation undergoes in tank.  The wine is then racked into a combination of 225-liter American and French oak barrels where it spends 15 months aging in the bodega's underground cellar.  Furthermore, the wine spends an additional 5 months in tank and then 8 months in tank before being bottled under the crianza designation.

The wine exhibits some traditional Rioja characteristics - dark fruit berries like blueberry and blackberry, vanilla and cola, with hints of floral tones and licorice.  The palate brings about additional flavors of spice, smoke with ripe, fine-grained tannins.  Crianza Rioja truly offers some of the best values, while still providing a rich, substantial structure that one would expect from this region.
