Sattler Zweigelt '15

Sattler Zweigelt '15

Growing up wandering vineyards and with a family of winemakers, Erich Sattler quickly realized his path to making wine, eventually succeeding his family's vineyards. While it continues to be a family affair, Sattler, who is fourth generation, is indicative of a path for certain future generations, of vintners in Austria. Those who are still implementing practices and techniques, echoing those of former generations, while utilizing modern day technology. Sattler practices certified minimal-impact vineyard management, does not irrigate his 22 hectares, green harvests to reduce yields and harvests by hand. Some of his Zweigelt vines are up to 40 years old, grown in granite-rich soils. His "classic" line of wines maintains a lively, fresh character. Zweigelt is a crossing, who's parents are St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. The fruitier, softer edge of St. Laurent really shows in this bottling, aided by split aging in tank and large, old wooden barrels. Silky tannins and bright acidity accompany fresh strawberries and purple plum, with subtle hints of pepper and fresh herbs.
