Stolpman Vineyards, Estate Syrah '16

Ballard Canyon is a newer AVA for California, officially recognized in 2013. A major proprietor to its recognition is Thomas Stolpman; the largest vineyard in the AVA, Stolpman Vineyards is considered the founding vineyard of Ballard Canyon.. He believed that Syrah and other Rhône varieties were a perfect viticultural match for the area. Now, Syrah is synonymous with Ballard Canyon. Thomas treats his vineyards very much like a Rhône viticulturalist would - natural farming, dry farming, & overall sustainability, which lay on three major limestone ridgelines of Santa Barbara County, unobstructed by the Pacific Ocean. This is a great example of the continuous evolution in the wine world, pushing boundaries into parts relatively unknown where terroir is still possible as well as the harmonious balance of synchronicity of varietal and place. Stolpman continues to experiment with the varietals, including Sangiovese. This is considered Stolpman's flagship bottling. Concentration is heavily relied on from dry farming techniques (no longer extended maceration and intense punch downs alongside new oak, as in the past), and a gentle fermentation process, through free run. The wine has fine balance, allowing itself to be enjoyed young or even over the course of several years. The wine shows ripe dark fruit with a savory depth, Syrah's signature quality. The wine is silky and has more fine grained tannins that create a softer structure that is highly complimentary to its likeminded profile of plush fresh berries and flowers; there is great natural weight and depth completely reliant on place.
