We are huge fans of the work of Craig McNaught and his team at Stony Brook Vineyards in Franschhoek.

I had a chance to visit and stay with McNaught in South Africa a few years back, and can speak to the singularity of their property, an old fruit farm, that backs up to the Hottentots-Holland Mountain.

McNaught was one of the first in South Africa to plant the Spanish grape varietal, Tempranillo. This is just the second vintage of "Ovidius," and it is truly outstanding.

This is not a wine for the faint-hearted. The grapes are harvested in February. They are crushed and spend roughly a week on their skins to extract tannin and color. The wine is fermented with natural yeast in stainless steel. Its malolactic fermentation is completed in 225-liter oak barrels, and it is aged in barrel for 27 months, a mixture of new and 2nd year barrels.

The 2014 has a gorgeous nose, with more red fruit than dark, notes of cocoa, herbs and a touch of balsamic. This is full-bodied on the palate, with rich fruit, layers of baking spices and pepper notes, and a long finish.

Fire up the grill, this would be a nice pairing with lamb chops or dry-aged ribeye.
