Sylvain Pataille Bourgogne Rouge '17

Sylvain Pataille Bourgogne Rouge '17

Pataille's winery is located in the northernmost part of the Côte d'Or in the appellation of Marsannay-la-Côte. Marsannay has been growing vines as early as the 7th century, with its proximity to Dijon, but only recently has quality been recognized here (it is the latest AOC for the Côte de Nuits). In fact, Sylvain has been instrumental in promoting the quality of Marsannay fruit and pushing for AOC recognition of the high quality terroir within this region.

What's remarkable, for an area based on familial ties and inheritance, Pataille is a self-starter, highly trained, who purchased his own property, having slowly obtained vineyards from renting one hectare in 1999 to now owning 15 hectares, and does not come from a family in winemaking (just a father who was friends with some!). A wine can be telling to the person behind it, and with Pataille's wines, that is exactly the case; energetic wines with brilliant, intellectual depth and balance – unadulterated, un-manipulated.

This wine comes from a small plot of vines that were planted in 1956 on classic clay-limestone soils just north of Marsannay in Chenôve. Winemaking is hands-off and gentle, with indigenous yeast fermentation, and a year in mostly used barrels with a small amount of whole cluster grapes giving a backbone of organic plant-based structure. There’s no fining or filtering, and only a minimal amount of sulfur added at bottling.

This is sincere and honest red burgundy that over delivers for the price. The nose is very pretty with soft florals and lavender stems over a savory earth tone. The fruit is multi-dimensional with loads of bright crushed cherry and shimmering dark fruit tones. The wine leaves your mouth with a salt and pepper sensation and an herby, almost bay leaf tone rounding it out a fuller body than expected for the 12.5% alcohol. This would be fabulous with a Pasta e Fagioli with pancetta or a potted pork rillette, country mustard and a baguette. The wine tastes even better on day two if you can resist!
