Tavignano Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi "Misco" '16

In early July, my family and I traveled to the Marche region of Italy for our summer vacation. It is a place that I've fallen in love with over the years. Marche offers incredible natural beauty, with beautiful coastline, rolling hills and mountains. Culinarily its cuisine is diverse, with everything from great seafood, to pasta, to truffles and more.

As a wine region, Le Marche has lots to offer. If there was a varietal and wine the region was most associated with, it's definitely Verdicchio. A varietal that has historical traces back to the 14th century, it is native to Marche, but has genetic links to grapes such as Greco and Trebbiano. There are two main DOC's (appellations) that Verdiccchio is grown, the largest and most prominent is Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, and the other nearby Verdicchio di Matelica.

On our trip we had the pleasure of having a cheese tasting at one of the very best producers and purveyors in the region, Gastronomia Beltrami in Cartoceto. Vittorio Beltrami not only loves cheese but is a huge collector of wine, and lying around his shop he has many old bottles that can be purchased. That afternoon we had the fortunate to open up a bottle of this very wine from Tavignano, only from the 1999 vintage! The wine was remarkably alive, still fresh, with plenty of earthy and mineral tones that complimented the cheese. This is continued proof that Verdicchio is a noble, complex varietal, delicious in its youth , but with the ability to age.

What a surprise and pleasure to find this wine upon my return. Tavignano is a medium sized producer, making roughly 130,000 bottles per year from their estate in Cingoli. Their Verdicchio vines fall into the DOC of Castelli dei Jesi, and are situated along the Esino and Musone river valleys, which help bring moderating cooling winds to the vineyards. The calcerous-clay soil helps endow the wines with a distinct mineral personality, which are evident in its youth, but increase as it sits in bottle.

The 2016 Verdicchio "Misco" is really showing well right now. Bright notes of citrus and fine herbs on the nose, the palate has weight, wonderful minerality, and a long, complex finish. Drink it now with seafood or cheese, and come back for more so that you can cellar a few and taste its development.

Another example of Marche magic!
