About a year ago to this day, I traveled to Italy to visit producers in Emilia-Romagna. In what was an eye opening trip, I came back with the understanding that the Sangiovese of Romagna has been ignored for too long. 

Over the past year we have slowly introduced our customers on the wine club to the Sangiovese of Tenuta La Viola in Bertinoro and Tenuta Casali in Mercato Saraceno. 

I have saved one of my favorites for last. "Baruccia" from Tenuta Casali is the type of Sangiovese I want to drink on a daily basis.

Tenuta Casali is a small, family run winery is located in Mercato Saraceno, in the Romagna DOC. The Savio valley that Tenuta Casali lies within, doesn't have extensive swaths of arable land. The Casali vineyards climb up from the river, headed into the hills, all being surrounded by forest on either side. 

From these vineyards, Tenuta Casali produce a trio of Sangiovese. "Baruccia" is a step up from "Palazzina," which was featured in the $20 and under a month ago. The vineyard sits between 525 and 650 feet above sea level. Facing southeast, the soil is a mixture of stones and clay and limestone. The wine is fermented in tank and aged for 5 months in used French oak barrels.

The 2017 "Baruccia" is delicious. Notes of black cherry, menthol, herbs and mineral can be found on the nose and palate. The wine is medium bodied, with a silky texture and soft tannins. 

Whether you are enjoying with simple snacks like aged Parmigiano and cured meats like Salame di Felino and Coppa Piacentina, or drinking alongside a grilled hangar steak, this satisfies. Don't miss it.
