Sangiovese is known in Italy for being one of its most noble grape varieties.

It is possible to taste several different bottling of Sangiovese from the same producer and come away with different nuances based on its terroir or style in which the producer desires.

Such is the case when it comes to the fantastic range of Sangiovese from Tenuta La Viola, a small producer based in the village of Bertinoro in Romagna. Stefano Gabellini is truly proud of his wines, and when he takes you on a journey through each wine, he often talks about “Il Colombarone” as the wine that most typically represents La Viola and Bertinoro.

1998 was the first vintage for “Il Colombarone,” a wine produced from two vineyards in Bertinoro. Made entirely with Sangiovese, the grapes are hand harvested, with a careful selection both in the vineyards and cellar. Alcoholic fermentation occurs in stainless steel, with repeated crushing for 14 to 21 days. It is aged in a combination of 55% stainless steel and 45% used barrique for six months.

This is classic Romagna Sangiovese, with a Bertinoro twist. Classic cherry and violet notes on the nose, lead into a full-bodied and rich palate. There are chewy tannins, that are well integrated into the fruit. We highly recommend decanting this wine for an hour before serving, and making sure to enjoy it alongside meats such as grilled lamb chops or braised beef cheeks.

This is a wine to stock up on, as it will drink well now, but also be a wine that improves in bottle over the next 6 years. A phenomenal value.
