Tenuta La Viola "Oddone" Romagna Sangiovese Superiore '18

Sangiovese is one of the noble grape varieties of Italy. While Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico get most of the hype, the Sangiovese of Romagna can be every bit as complex and age worthy.

Craig's trip to Emilia-Romagna in January of this year, provided a chance for a deep dive into the world of Romagna Sangiovese.

What he discovered was not just incredible quality, but also diversity within the region. Who knew that Alessandro Massnaghetti, the famed cartographer who has mapped in depth the Barolo region, also has a map for Romagna?

Tenuta la Viola is located just to the west of the city of Cesena, is the village of Bertinoro. Just on the outskirts of this medieval village, Craig had a chance to visit with Stefano Gabellini, owner of Tenutal La Viola. Founded in 1962, this has always been a family business. The focus here is on classic wines, representative of the region, but also respectful of the environment.

Since 1999 the vineyards have been certified organic, and 2018 marks the first vintage produced from Biodynamic principles.

Those vineyards are situated on rolling hills that face towards the Adriatic Sea. On the other side you have the Tosco-Romagnolo Apennines, which has a resulting microclimate that brings in cooling breezes that helps bring balance to the wines. The soil is a mixture with clay, limestone, as well as rich with ancient marine sediments.

One of the notable attributes to Sangiovese from Romagna is its structure. "Oddone" is a wine produced to showcase a more approachable style. To do so, there is a careful selection of grapes, softer extraction, less time on its skins and fermentation and aging is only in stainless steel tank.

The 2018 "Oddone" is an absolute pleasure to drink. Beautiful aromatics and flavors of cherry, wild strawberry, spice and mineral. The tannic structure is soft, and the freshness lingers after each sip. We do recommend giving this a little oxygen upon opening, an hour in the decanter will add to its complexity.

It is an outstanding value that should be paired with a mixed grill including lamb, beef, and duck.
