Alpine France holds a soft spot in the heart of many French wine drinkers. In Eastern France, you can find regions such as Jura, Savoie and Bugey. While the wines of this region rarely attain the status of more famous French regions, they are worth seeking out, particularly because of their versatility at the table. Bugey is a region located between the Jura and Savoie. While it has a long history of wine production, it only gained AOC status in 2009. Franco-philes best know Bugey for its sparkling wine, but both still white and red wines can also be found. One of my favorite producers in Bugey is Thierry Tissot. Based in the village of Vaux-en-Bugey, Thierry is a fifth generation grower, having taken over the helm in 2000. He is joined by his wife Céline who has degrees as an agriculture engineer and enologist. Farming at the Tissot domaine is organic, with biodynamic treatments used in the vineyards. The couple also prizes bio-diversity in their vineyards, which are surrounded by sub-alpine forests.  I am excited for you to try one of the two red wines produced at the domaine. 100% Gamay Noir grown in the Tissot’s flagship Mataret vineyard. The Gamay vines are over 40 years old, planted in gravelly soil with clay and limestone. Tissot uses whole cluster fruit, with semi-carbon fermentation over 10 days in stainless steel tanks. The wine is further aged in stainless steel tank.  This is a delicious, aromatic red, full of personality. It offers notes of red fruit, herbs, spice and mineral notes. It is light bodied, yet with enough weight to pair with white meats such as chicken, turkey or pork.
