Douro Valley

Trans Douro Express "Baixo Corgo" Tinto '18

Mateus Almeida exemplifies so much of what we love about Portugal. He makes well balanced and full-charactered wines that live on the razor edge of rusticity, but always pull just shy with a soft elegance. He focuses on native varieties and has done incredible work to ensure the Douro Valley’s range of terroir, cultures and personalities is represented individually. Mateus is the fifth generation working in his underground wine cellar, dug directly into the same schist the wines come from.

Mateus would have us imagine ourselves on a “Trans Duoro Express” that runs across the length of the Duoro Valley alongside the river, the backbone of the region. For me, this sounds much more pleasant, and warmer, than the Snowpiercer like trip it feels like we are on in Chicago right now… On this imagined journey we make stops in the Duoro Superior, Cima Corgo and finally the region and wine featured today, Baixo Corgo. If you have been following along our wine clubs this past year, you have already tried the first two wines in the trio!

Baixo Corgo is a hybrid climate and the most mild of the three regions while still retaining some of the Mediterranean aspects featured in the other two wines. This is the most significantly Atlantic influenced area with much more rain. The region has the oldest plantings in the wider region and has historically been known for making Ruby and Tawny port, though still wines are becoming much more common thanks to producers like the Almeida family.

The wine is Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Roriz and Tinta Barroca from Schist soils. It is made simply to allow for the regional differences to stand out clearly: fermented and aged in concrete for eight months leading to a bright and snappy red wine with an incredible perfume, core of currant-like or salted licorice fruit, and a very generous and friendly personality. We really can’t recommend this wine enough for a range of occasions and is exactly what we love having around at home, wines that reward attention if not exactly demanding it. This would be fabulous with a weeknight beef stew but would do just as well with a board of cured meats like bresaola or saucisson sec and a firm salty cow cheese.
