Trans Douro Express "Cima Corgo" Tinto '18

Trans Douro Express "Cima Corgo" Tinto '18

A few years ago, winemaker Mateus Nicolau de Almeida started a very special project with the introduction of the Trans Douro Express wines. He created three wines under the label, each from a different subregion of the Douro. The goal, to show the climatic differences of the three sub-regions. So therefore, each bottling has the same blend and method for vinification, the only difference being in location. Mateus refers to his line as "climate" wines.

The Almeida's are the family of Portuguese wine; who ran famous port house Ramos Pinto for an extended period of time, who encouraged official recognition of the three major sub-regions of the Douro Valley through their personal research and development. This lists only a fracture of how important this family has been for the vitality and qualitative shift in Portuguese winemaking.

More recently, in a time where Port has been on the decline, the Portuguese have had to figure out what else they can produce - these dry, red wines are just the ticket to getting consumers to re-visit the slightly familiar yet an invigorating and new prospect.

Trans Douro Express is the winery that acknowledges all of the history, efforts, and love from the Almeida family, through Mateus.

Cima Corgo, one of the three main regions of the Douro. It is a site that is located just up the valley, on steep banks, near the Douro River. Cima Corgo is in the heart of the valley, and the climate here is almost Mediterranean, with vineyards full of schist soils.

This is a field blend of various native grapes to the area: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Sousão, and Tinta Amarela. Exact percentages are unknown as they are grown interspersed through one another and then harvested and co-fermented (traditional foot stomping of the grapes takes place) finishing with aging in concrete for 8 months.

Beautiful layers of floral tones are a highlight alongside subtle spice and herbal elements. Juicy, fleshy dark fruit rounds out the palate with a structure that is bright in acidity with plush tannins that aren't overbearing.
