Trans Douro Express Tinto "Cima Corgo" '16

Trans Douro Express Tinto "Cima Corgo" '16

Since Mateus Nicolau de Almeida's debut to the Chicago wine scene a couple of months ago, we have been excited to continue to showcase all that he has to offer.  We previously featured a white of his, and this month we are thrilled to introduce you to one of his red wines from the Cima Corgo appellation in the Douro.  As he does with his white wine, he uses the same grape varietals for each of his three red wine cuvées so that he can focus on highlighting vineyard site and its terroir, truly allowing us to see how a micro-climate can completely drive a wine from its structure to aromatics to characteristics on the palate.  While it's a very traditional aspect for Portuguese winemaking, what's so wonderful isn't just how great and interesting the wine is, but the man behind the wine.  The Almeida family is known for their big personality, full of charisma, hospitality and such a vibrant, big beam of energy.  That is just as much an aspect of terroir; the hand that drives the place is what contributes to what we love about a wine.   Cima Corgo, one of the three main regions of the Douro, is a site that is located just up the valley, on steep banks, near the Douro River; an intermediate region of the Douro, and the climate here is almost Mediterranean, with vineyards full of schist soils.  This is a field blend of various native grapes to the area: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Sousão, and Tinta Amarela.  Exact percentages are unknown as they are grown interspersed through one another and then harvested and co-fermented (traditional foot stomping of the grapes takes place!) finishing with aging in concrete for 8 months. In a time where Port has been on the decline, the Portuguese have had to figure out what else they can produce - these dry, red wines are just the ticket to getting consumers to re-visit the slightly familiar yet an innvigorating and new prospect.  Beautiful layers of floral tones are a highlight alongside subtle spice and herbal elements.  Juicy, fleshy dark fruit rounds out the palate with a structure that is bright in acidity with plush tannins that aren't overbearing.
