Troupis Moschofilero "Fteri" '18

2018 Troupis Moschofilero "Fteri," Mantinia, Greece While we might not be able to travel to Greece quite yet, the least we can do is transport ourselves through a glass of wine. If you know a thing or two about Greek wine than you will probably have heard of the grape Moschofilero. It is a mainstay varietal of the central Peloponnese, often used to produce light, aromatic, dry white wine. What you may not know is that Moschofilero is actually a pink-skinned grape, and it can be quite different in the hands of a skilled grower and winemaker. We wanted to introduce you to one of the best producers of Moschofilero in Greece. Troupis Winery was founded in 2010 by Yiannis Troupis. Over the course of the past decade, they have become one of the premier producers within the Mantinia PDO.  Yiannis is the kind of guy that never stops moving—he’s always tweaking and tinkering and buzzing about, trying to figure out the way things work and how to improve them.  One of the things that makes Yiannis’ approach to Moschofilero so interesting is that he continues to experiment with its versatility, producing it in a variety of styles.  The fruit for the Moschofilero Fteri all comes from within the Mantinia PDO, but is cropped at slightly higher yields than the PDO allows for. The fruit is grown in the estate vineyards of Troupis, planted at an elevation of 600-700 meters. The soil is composed of sandy loam, with heavier clay loams and good drainage. The grapes are hand harvested, cooled before crushing, and then fermented in stainless steel tanks. It is aged on its lees till bottling in the spring.  The 2015 vintage of "Fteri" was so popular at our store we just had to bring you the 2018 vintage. Beautiful aromas of fresh peach, herbs and mineral. There is nice weight, but also good acidity and well-balanced fruit.  You can just pour yourself a glass and sip on its own, but hey, it's from Greece, which means it can be paired with a huge array of seafood, vegetables, and even white meats.
