Valérie Forgues Côt, Touraine Rouge '16

Loire Valley

Valérie Forgues Côt, Touraine Rouge '16

If you could only drink wine from one region in France, what would that be?

For someone that loves wine, like myself, the answer gets quite complicated. Yet, I know that I can make a strong argument for the Loire Valley.

This wine in particular had me thinking of how great the Loire is, and not in a complexity sense, but rather in a sheer pleasure context.

Valérie Forgues is an up and coming winemaker in the Touraine region of the Loire Valley. Two decades ago she moved to the Loire from Paris with her now ex-husband. They purchased an estate, and began their life in the Touraine, with Valérie focused on parenting at that time. After their divorce in 2008, Valérie found herself and her kids alone at the estate. Rather than sell and move, she dove head first into her life as a vigneron. With the help of Didier Barrouillet, winemaker for Clos Roche Blanche, she slowly learned, and over time converted to organic viticulture.

She farms 16 hectares of vines in total, the classic grapes of the Touraine including Sauvignon Blanc, Pineau d’Aunis, Gamay and Côt. Many of the vines on the property are very old.

This wine, 100% Côt (aka Malbec) comes from vines 50-years old on average. The vinification is straightforward, the grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, with fermentation in stainless steel with natural yeasts. The wine is aged in vat and is bottled without fining or filtering.

This is such a delicious wine, chock full of bright red cherry and wild strawberry notes, mineral, and pepper. Light bodied, it is a red you can put a slight chill on, and drink with virtually any food, from a selection of cheese and charcuterie, fish such as grilled mackerel, and even roasted chicken.
