Vartsikhe Krakhuna Dry White Wine '16

I finally caved. I went out of my comfort zone and dove head first into tasting a huge array of wines from the Republic of Georgia.

I don't claim to be an expert in the wines of Georgia, but after my tasting I was certainly excited by what I found. Over the next 3 months, we are going to share with you some of the exciting wines of this very old wine producing country.

Vatsikhe Marani is a very small winery located in the Imereti region of Western Georgia, near the Black Sea. Baghdati, the sub-region where Vartsikhe lies, produces a range of wines from local and ancient varieties. The wines at Vatsikhe Marani are made by one of the top winemakers of the country, Kakha Tchotiashvili. They farm organically in the vineyard, and all wines are made in the classic way, fermented with natural yeast in Kveri (buried clay earthenware amphorae) lined with paraffin wax. After the fermentation, the Kveri are sealed and covered with soil until the Spring time. The wine is then moved to another Kveri, aged for a few months till it is opened and drunk during a serious of big celebrations called Supras. The leftover wine is then bottled.

We snagged a significant amount of the 550 bottles produced of this amazingly exotic and delicious wine. Big notes of white flowers, ripe peach, and spice. The wine has incredible intensity, yet it is only 12% alcohol and has very nice freshness.

We recommend serving this wine at around 60 degrees, and using big Burgundy stems. You can drink this over a few days as it doesn't really oxidize. Really cool stuff, that is beyond a curiosity and is just a delicious, fresh white wine!
