Vartsikhe Saperavi Dry Red Wine '15

Vatsikhe Marani is a very small winery located in the Imereti region of Western Georgia, near the Black Sea. Baghdati, the sub-region where Vartsikhe lies, produces a range of wines from local and ancient varieties. The wines at Vatsikhe Marani are made by one of the top winemakers of the country, Kakha Tchotiashvili. They farm organically in the vineyard, and all wines are made in the classic way, fermented with natural yeast in Kveri (buried clay earthenware amphorae) lined with paraffin wax. After the fermentation, the Kveri are sealed and covered with soil until the Spring time. The wine is then moved to another Kveri, aged for a few months till it is opened and drunk during a serious of big celebrations called Supras. The leftover wine is then bottled.

The Saperavi varietal is one of Georgia's unique and indigenous varietals.  It is technically a teinturier-type grape, which means that it has a black skin as well as black juice and pulp.  This provokes a rich, flavorful red wine.  It has great acidity to balance out its bold, yet not too overpowering structure.  There is nothing like it, we promise, and it's worth checking out.  We are talking about a "new" area for wine for most of us, but is in fact one of the oldest areas for winemaking dating back to ancient times.  This is a wine of character.
