Vendrell Rived "Miloca" Carinyena '18

Josep M. Vendrell Rived is one of our favorite producers in the region of Montsant in Spain. His small family winery farms their grapes organically, and looks to make wines that highlight the two main grapes of the region Garnatxa and Carinyena.

Carinyena, which is also known as Mazuelo or Samsó in Spain (and Carignan in other parts of the world), is said to have also originated in the Aragón region of Spain.

Truth be told, growing Samsó pretty difficult.  It is highly productive, so the vines need to be old, or yields have to be methodically restricted for it to attain quality.  It is late-ripening, so it, like Garnatxa, needs a warm climate.  Its berries are what are known as "vine-huggers", clinging to the vine, making it essential to hand harvest.

The Miloca Carinyena is grown on granitic soil.  It is an amazingly pure expression of the variety. The aromatics show notes of red currant, cranberry, mineral, hay and subtle baking spices.  Delicate on the palate, it offers more brightness than the Garnatxa, and has great length for a wine at this price point. Pair this with a chicken tagine made with apricots, figs and olives, or any of your summertime BBQ favorites!
