Vendrell Rived "Serè" Montsant '17

In April, I traveled to the region of Montsant to visit with Josep Maria Vendrell Rived. This longtime grower is also one of the region's most under-the-radar producers. He started producing wine in 2000, after working at the local Capçanes cooperative. His vineyards, many of which are old-vines, are located in Marçà and Capçanes. He produces roughly 60,000 bottles of wine, with several different labels. His value wine Serè is in my estimation one of the top values in the region of Montsant. The region, with a long history of growing grapes focus on two varietals Garnatxa (Grenache) and Carinyena (Carignan). The appellation essentially encompasses the more well known DOC of Priorat. While there are differences in the two regions, and even within Montsant and Priorat themselves, this is a place that deserves more notoriety. The wines can be every bit as good as ones from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas in the Southern Rhône, but at a fraction of the price. Serè is a blend of 70% Garnatxa and 30% Carinyena, all farmed organically. It is fermented in tank and spends 6 months in used French oak barrels. The 2017 is a new arrival, showing off plenty of pretty red berry fruit on the nose. It is medium bodied, with rich fruit and spice notes, and a long, balanced finish.
