Many of the world’s best red wines come from igneous soil. In France, the famous wines of Hermitage in the Northern Rhône, not to mention Beaujolais, produce wines of aromatic complexity and beautiful mineral underpinnings. 

Yet there are other great “terroirs” in the world that also have either granite or volcanic soil.

Spain, and in particular Galicia is one of those places.

This month we are offering a really special wine from Viña Mein, a producer that I have had the chance to visit a handful of times, located in the Ribeiro appellation. 

Located in the interior of Galicia, the region has a long history of viticultural dating back to Roman times, when they were there to mine for gold. When you think of Ribeiro, white wine comes to mind. That is the regions speciality, produced primarily from the Treixadura grape.

Javier Alen, owner of Viña Mein has always been a forward thinking gentleman. He founded the winery in the late ’80’s, way ahead of the interest in Galician wine. He also was ahead of the curve when he hired Dani Landi and Fernando Garcia, two of Spain’s most talented young winemakers to help expand the winery into the world of red wines. Tinto Clásico and Tinto Atlántico were born.

Tinto Atlántico de Viña Mein is a wine produced from the local varietals, Brancellao, Sousón, and Caiño Longo. The grapes come from 80 year-old vines, from a single parcel planted in granite. 

The wine is fermented in 1,500 Liter barrels and aged for 18 months in French oak. 

This is a truly Atlántic inspired, cool-climate red. The nose may remind some of a great Marcel Lapierre Morgon. Beautiful high-toned red fruit, along with citrus peel and mineral notes. The palate is pure silk, more red fruit tones, orange, mineral, and soft tannins on the finish. Truly a special red wine, that will be great for warm weather drinking. Have a bottle alongside some grilled salmon.
