Von Buhl Sauvignon Blanc '15

Von Buhl Sauvignon Blanc '15

Von Buhl has had a quite the history - since 1849, they kept the winery in the family as long as possible, for over 150 years.  Until the last generation, who was childless, there was no one to inherit the estate.  It saw a few owners, as it was leased, but as of 2013 it was sold to Achim Niederberger who set up a new team to run his estate, no longer sourcing out, but getting back to an estate-driven style.  Niederberger has put a lot of care into the Von Buhl domaine, including a now certified organic site.  Historically, Von Buhl have always be associated with quality and it's great to see them back on track.  The Pfalz historically is one of the oldest winegrowing regions in Germany, and it's amazing to see such a colorful timeline with a triumphant return to round it out.

While known for their Riesling, they have a very small percentage, less than 4%, that they dedicate to Sauvignon Blanc.  Similarly to the profile of a dry Riesling, the Sauvignon blanc sees luscious, ripe fruit notes centered around citrus - lemon, grapefruit, alongside classic German minerality - crushed stone and granite, limestone and slate, to name a few.  This adds a sensational textural quality to a grape that is typically viewed as light and lean.  The Pfalz is the warmest wine region in Germany, which is why other varietals apart from Riesling have a chance to succeed, such as this delicious Sauvignon Blanc.
