Weingut Goldatzel "Johannisberger Vogelsang" Riesling Trocken '15

Weingut Goldatzel "Johannisberger Vogelsang" Riesling Trocken '15

Riesling is the most underrated grape varietal in the world.  For those of us who evaluate wines professionally, balance is a key attribute that we look for in great wine.  There can be no better balanced wine in the world than Riesling. Fruit, acidity, low alcohol, minerality, texture, and sometimes sugar. I say sometimes, because just like Chardonnay can come in many different forms, so does Riesling.  We take it personally that wine consumers don't incorporate Riesling more into their wine habits. To change that, we've arranged for an absolutely screaming deal on a absurdly delicious DRY Riesling from the Rheingau to be included in this months wine club. Goldatzel is a rising star in the Rheingau region of Germany. With 12 hectares of vines, and holdings in some of the best sites of Johannisberger, they produce around 70,000 bottles in total per year. This wine comes from the Vogelsang vineyard, composed of gravel and stones with a sandy loam sub-soil. The vines are 70 years-old, producing grapes with great aromatic and flavor intensity.  I could just smell this wine all day, with its yellow plum, peach and an intense salty aromatics.  Silky, with some red apple notes on the palate, and a long, bone-dry finish. Above all, Riesling is so versatile with food. A great option to bring to a BYOB sushi spot, but also brilliant with dishes based on pork.
