Weingut Judith Beck Blaufränkisch '16

Judith Beck is highly connected to the vines that she tends to, definitely a winemaker who is out in the vineyards as much as possible, located on the slopes of the Wagram.  She converted to biodynamics in 2007 and is in the process of converting to organic methods as well, highly involved in maintaining the authenticity of what drives the terroir of Austria, with a focus on traditional Austrian varieties, such as this Blaufränkisch.  As quoted from her website: "International style can be produced by everyone, everywhere. My wines are my own. They are here and now. And that is for me the most beautiful thing. Like my life in the vineyards."

Blaufränkisch is a grape that has been cultivated since the 18th century. Today it’s mostly planted in Hungary and Austria. Blaufränkisch wines are well structured, full of character and have a good ageing potential.  Natural fermentation undergoes in open wooden cask, then pressed and used barrique for 10 months.

This wine is inky and full of clear fruit tones of generous dark cherry, cassis and plum fruit, peppered with spice and nuanced by herbs and a touch of minerality.  Beck matures her Blaufränkisch in two phases in wood in order to attain a round, complex and vivid style that she seeks.  A versatile red for various types of wine drinkers, worth a try, as she also only makes 500 cases of this a year - a rare, value-driven treat indeed!
